Program Description 

 

Class Description:

  • Give attendees a reality-check understanding of the new demands reporters are facing in the wake of smaller newsrooms, completely mobile cellular network-based newsgathering gear, and social media demand
  • Cover the basic risk communications principles that officials must take into account when crafting their response to a high-stress situation or disaster
  • Discuss the known types of questions reporters always ask in a crisis
  • Show how to handle different reporters’ approaches to asking questions
  • Give a step by step checklist on how to prepare for an interview
  • Show real-world interview examples that went horribly wrong
  • Show real-world interview examples that went totally right and discuss how the interviewee knocked it out of the park!
  • AND MOST IMPORTANTLY… give attendees the opportunity to do an on-camera interview with a real broadcast camera if they wish and get constructive feedback on their performance

 

About the instructor: Kerry Shearer is an extremely versatile communications professional, with skills ranging from issues management to crisis response, social media outreach, marketing campaigns, audio and video production, news reporting, broadcasting and webcasting. He thrives on helping communications colleagues develop their proficiency and expertise!
