Description: This is a comprehensive course that addresses job performance requirements for Fire Officer I. The course will include lessons from the IFSTA Company Officer course relevant to Fire Officer I. Those areas include:

  • Communications,
  • Media Relations,
  • Fire Department Structure,
  • Legal Liabilities,
  • Supervision & Management,
  • Company Level Training,
  • Community Relations,
  • Investigations,
  • Pre-incident planning, 
  • Incident Scene Communications & Management, 
  • Size-up & Incident plans,
  • Firefighter Health and Safety

Supplemental instruction will address fire officer job-performance requirements that are not addressed in the course. Participants will be required to complete practical activity sheets and job sheets. Homework assignments are part of the course and this program requires proficiency demonstration in written practical skills as well as 100% attendance.

Training Audience:  Fire officers or those aspiring to be fire officers.

Prerequisite(s): National Firefighter II Certification, and

Hazardous Materials Operations (HMO) certification or Hazardous Materials Operations Refresher (HMOR) (within past 12 months), and

Fire Service Instructor I Certification, and

Incident Command System Course Completion (16-hour)

The following are the recognized courses:

    1. NIMS ICS for Fire Service
    2. NIMS ICS for EMS
    3. National Fire Academy, Incident Command System Course
    4. NFA ICS 100 and 200 (Independent Study or Facilitated Courses)
    5. Incident Command System and Resource Management for the Fire Service.

Course Length: 40-hours

Certification: Pennsylvania State Fire Academy IFSAC-ProBoard certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course requirements.

Textbook: International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) Fire Officer, Principles and Practice, Enhanced 3rd Edition. Textbook will be provided in class.

Equipment Needs: Pen / pencil, note-taking material. Laptop for completion of in-class course work. (A County laptop can be made available of in-class use.)
