Description: Students completing this course will be able to safely and effectively control, manage, and mitigate a hazardous materials release using first due resources until the arrival of additional specialized units. This program was designed to educate the student in hazardous materials responses and to prepare the student for professional certification testing in accordance with NFPA 472 Operations Level.

Students will learn and adapt the knowledge and skill requirements for effective scene and response management. The goal of this program is to provide the First Responder with the training needed to comply with NFPA 472 Chapter 5 Competencies for the First Responder at the Operational Level, and 29 CFR 1910.120 OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, (HAZWOPER), First Responder Operations Level.

This course teaches the responders basic understanding of chemistry, PPE, reference material, defensive actions, proper decontamination techniques, and other basic needs to operate at a hazardous materials situation.  At the completion of the class, students will be given the opportunity to take a written and practical exams for National Certification in Hazardous Materials Operations. 

Students must have National Certification at the Hazardous Materials Awareness Level to qualify to sit for the HMO National Certification test.

Hazmat Ops can be taken without National Certification testing a State Certificate will be issued at the end of class.

Training Audience: The primary target audiences for this course are the First Responders (fire, rescue, emergency medical, police, etc.) who will witness or discover a hazardous substance/materials release

Prerequisite(s): None Students must conform to the PA State Fire Academy’s Facial Hair Policy that requires a student be clean shaven except for a neatly trimmed moustache.

Course Length: 32-hours

Certification: IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations certificate will be issued from the State Fire Academy or those not taking the national certification test, a Pennsylvania State Fire Academy certification will be issued.

Textbook: Current textbook needed will be loaned to the student for the duration of the class. Students will be charged for the cost of the textbook if not returned at the end of the course.

Equipment Needs: Pen / pencil, note-taking material. Required: Full PPE, SCBA and spare cylinder.
