Description: This course gives an overview of how sprinkler systems are designed and constructed, why some large loss fires occur in spite of the presence of sprinklers, and how the fire department can minimize the chance of such an occurrence.

Course objectives:

  1. Identifying factors resulting in excessive damage to sprinklered buildings.
  2. Describe the importance of sprinkler systems.
  3. Recognize and describe the components of an automatic sprinkler system.
  4. Describe how automatic sprinkler systems operate.
  5. Evaluate fire protection features of a facility in order to develop a pre-fire plan.

Training Audience: All firefighters

Prerequisite(s): None

Course Length: 6-hours

Certification: Pennsylvania State Fire Academy certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course requirements.

Textbook: Training materials will be provided in class.

Equipment Needs: Pen / pencil, note-taking material. Full turnout gear will be required for the practical evolutions.
