Description: The DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course will train officers in recognizing and interpreting signs associated with impaired driving. This course will not only improve the student’s knowledge and skills in apprehending the impaired driver, but also certify them as practitioners in the national-recognized Standard Field Sobriety Testing battery including Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus ("HGN"), Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand. This course includes classroom lecture, and expanded two day alcohol workshop allowing practice with actual impaired persons, and a block of instruction from current trial attorneys within the Chester County District Attorney’s Office. This training will be conducted Tuesday through Thursday 8am-4pm, concluding with a morning session Friday 8am-12pm.

Following the SFST training, students are encouraged to stay for an additional certification in the PennDOT Sobriety Checkpoint curriculum. This training allows the officer to participate in Sobriety Checkpoints and roving patrols throughout Chester County. Officers will be trained in the Chester County Impaired Driving Program’s policies and procedures for both impaired driving checkpoints and roving enforcement patrols. Officers previously certified in the program who need to re-certify are also invited to attend this session individually. This training will be conducted Friday afternoon 12pm-4pm.

Please note that you MUST have permission from your Chief or agency training coordinator prior to being accepted into this class. Due to the high demand for this training, one officer per agency is initially accepted with additions made based on seating availability.
